چکیده
This paper describes our efforts towards utilizing multilingual spoken dialogue systems as an aid to second language acquisition. We argue that it is important for language students to have the opportunity to practice communication in a non-threatening environment, something that a computer can naturally provide. We envision a three-stage interaction focused around a specific topic of a lesson plan. The first stage would familiarize the student with the vocabulary and syntax by presenting simulated dialogues at a Web page. The second stage would involve spoken dialogue interaction with the computer, either at a workstation or on the telephone. The third stage would provide feedback to the user on the quality of the utterances they recorded during the dialogue exchange. We have thus far concentrated on Mandarin and English as the two languages, where the system can be configured reversibly to support either learning English or Mandarin. We have begun to develop dialogue interaction capabilities for a number of domains centered around the scenario of a traveler to a

The Relationship between Self-esteem and Conversational Dominance of Iranian EFL Learners’ Speaking
The crucial role of affective factors like anxiety, inhibition, motivation and self-esteem have long been of interest in the field of language learning due to their enormous association with the cognitive processes involved in performance in a second or foreign language. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between Iranian EFL learners’ self-esteem and conversational dominance in ...
متن کاملSpoken language understanding and interaction: machine learning for human-like conversational systems
In recent years, the interest in research in speech understanding and spoken interaction has soared due to the emergence of virtual personal assistants. However, whilst the ability of these agents to recognise conversational speech is maturing rapidly, their ability to understand and interact is still limited. At the same time we have witnessed the development of the number of models based on m...
متن کاملImpact of Interaction and Output Modality on the Vocabulary Learning and Retention of Iranian EFL Learners
This study investigated the impact of interaction and output modality on vocabulary learning and retention of EFL learners. To investigate the impact of Interaction, solitary (n =69) and collaborative (n =62) groups served as experimental and No Interaction No Output (n =26) as control group. To address the effect of modality, spoken (n =39) and written (n =31) modalities served as experimental...

متن کاملImproving the speech recognition performance of beginners in spoken conversational interaction for language learning
The provision of automatic systems that can provide conversational practice for beginners would make a valuable addition to existing aids for foreign language teaching. To achieve this goal, the SCILL (Spoken Conversational Interaction for Language Learning) project is developing a spoken dialogue system that is capable of maintaining interactive dialogues with non-native students in the target...
متن کاملAn Investigation of Spoken Output and Intervention Types among Iranian EFL Learners
This study was inspired by VanPatten and Uludag’s (2011) study on the transferability of training via processing instruction to output tasks and Mori’s (2002) work on the development of talk-in-interaction during a group task. An interview was devised as the pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest to compare four intervention types for teaching the simple past passive: traditional intervention ...
